The Story of Hydriads
Before I tell you a single thing about my company, or myself let me first share this—I love what I do. I honestly don’t think I could have said the same thing five years ago when I was employed as an airline agent, a good, steady job I’d had for nearly 22 years, but certainly not something I would call a passion. The turning point in my life came in 2004 when I decided to pursue massage therapy to do something I have always cared about—helping others to be good to themselves and their bodies. I suppose I must have also been more receptive at that time to messages from the Universe then ever before, because soon thereafter, I found my true calling.
All it took were the amazing fragrances of some handmade soaps I’d bought at a local craft fair. Certainly, those heavenly scents were the initial hook, but when I experienced first-hand the amazing benefits these soaps had on my skin, well, I was sold. By the following summer, I’d started experimenting with my own fragrances after teaching myself how to make soap—filling my home with wonderful aromas while producing fantastic little gifts for friends and family. After working several craft fairs and receiving so much positive feedback from everyone, I realized, this was more than a hobby. Soon, my kitchen became my soap lab and the laundry room became the warehouse and with the help and encouragement of my husband Tim, Hydriads was born.
In Greek mythology, hydriads were the daughters of the sea gods who protected the earth’s bodies of water. I thought it was such a lovely name and idea—this notion of taking care of something precious to you. And it certainly had relevance for what I was doing with my soaps. After all, my goal with this new endeavor has always been to make everyone aware of the many benefits of natural, handcrafted soaps. With the help of a massage supplier in Georgia, Hydriads made its official debut in April of 2006 followed by a private label deal with a franchise of day spas that would put us in 12 stores nationwide. And what I love most is that Hydriads is very much a family affair with my son Bryan serving as the official soap sniffer and my husband lending his craftsmanship with displays, gift crates, soap cutting and helping to build the workshop in our basement.
I can’t wait for you to try Hydriads and share in our passion for natural, handcrafted soaps, balms and scrubs. I guarantee your body and soul will thank you for it!
